Incontinence is an ongoing struggle for millions of Americans, and most of the well-known solutions aren’t technically solutions. Instead, they address the symptoms of incontinence, instead of resolving the problem itself. The most effective treatment for incontinence, sacral nerve modulation, has a success rate of more than 90% and many ecstatic proponents. Dr. Sasse’s patient, Tammey, is one of them.

Finding a Solution

It was a long list of symptoms that finally brought Tammey to Dr. Sasse’s Reno practice. She was struggling with “constant urgency, leakage or outright wetting [her] pants if [she] did not find a bathroom in time, frequent urination, interrupted sleep to go to the bathroom, pads were always wet” — a long list of frustrations that were seriously impacting her quality of life. At 58, she was far too young to be limited like this.

In desperation, she tried standard remedies, including “pads, exercises, and limiting water intake before bed or when traveling.” Nothing helped, which is why she describes her reaction to learning about sacral nerve modulation as both excited and hopeful. “I first saw Dr. Sasse on the local news,” she explains, and quickly scheduled a consultation. “He is very friendly and accommodating, interested in my experience with incontinence, and very positive about sacral nerve modulation.”

Expectations and Reality

Dr. Sasse explained what Tammey could expect in terms of the procedure itself and its effects. She was hopeful that she “would no longer have wet pads all day, less urgency, and less need to be near a bathroom all the time,” she says. “The reality far exceeded my expectation. The difference in before and after are amazing. Before, I could not sleep through the night without getting up to go to the bathroom. I now sleep through the night. Before, I was reluctant to go on long drives or long outings if I wasn’t familiar with the facilities. Now I don’t hesitate to go adventuring. I no longer have to take extra clothes or pads with me when I leave the house. I am more confident because I know I am not going to have an accident in public.”

Tammey’s experience is common among people who pursue sacral nerve modulation as a treatment for incontinence. And as someone who understands the frustration of dealing with bladder leakage, she has some advice for others in the same boat. “Get this now!” she advises. “It’s amazing and will change your life. I love Dr. Sasse and this therapy is a game changer.”
