Does Incontinence Ever Go Away?

As the director of a continence center, I understand how frustrating and life-altering incontinence can be. Patients often ask, “Does incontinence ever go away?” Unfortunately, incontinence is a progressive condition, which means it typically only worsens with time unless you take steps to manage it. While bladder or bowel leakage can be challenging, it is highly treatable, and most patients experience significant improvement or even complete resolution of their symptoms. Treatment options vary based on the underlying cause, but one of the most successful and transformative therapies we offer is sacral neuromodulation (SNM).

Understanding Incontinence

Incontinence, whether it’s urinary or fecal, can arise from several factors, such as weakened pelvic muscles, nerve damage, or overactive bladder muscles. While it may not always “go away” completely on its own, with the right treatment, most people regain control and experience a significant reduction in symptoms, leading to a much-improved quality of life.

Sacral Neuromodulation (SNM): A Highly Effective Solution

One of the most promising and effective treatments for incontinence is sacral neuromodulation. This minimally invasive therapy is designed to target the sacral nerves, which play a key role in controlling bladder and bowel function. By modulating these nerves with mild electrical impulses, SNM helps restore normal communication between the pelvic floor nerve plexus, brain and the bladder or bowel.

How Sacral Neuromodulation Works

  • Stage 1: Test Phase – During this phase, a painless temporary lead is placed near the sacral nerves, and for several days, we monitor your progress to see how well your symptoms respond.
  • Stage 2: Permanent Implant – If the test phase shows significant improvement (typically a 50% or greater reduction in incontinence episodes), a small pacemaker is implanted under the skin in a painless 20-minute minor procedure. This device provides continuous stimulation to the sacral nerves, regulating bladder or bowel function.

Success Rates of SNM

Sacral neuromodulation has a success rate of over 90% in reducing or eliminating symptoms of urinary and fecal incontinence. For many patients, this means the end of embarrassing accidents and a return to a normal, active life. It is especially beneficial for those who haven’t responded to more conservative treatments like medications or pelvic floor therapy.

Does Incontinence Ever Go Away?

For most people, yes—incontinence can be greatly reduced or resolved with the right approach, but it doesn’t go away on its own. SNM offers a long-term solution for those suffering from overactive bladder, urinary retention, or fecal incontinence. The best part is that the therapy is adjustable and reversible, meaning we can fine-tune the settings or remove the device if needed, though most patients find long-lasting relief.

Hope Through Treatment

Incontinence doesn’t have to be a permanent condition. With advances like sacral neuromodulation, we’ve seen many, many people regain control and confidence. If you’re struggling with incontinence, I encourage you to seek help. At our continence center, we’re here to provide compassionate care, tailored to your specific needs, so you can enjoy life without the limitations of incontinence.
